This process is for school-owned iPads managed through a mobile device management system. The LockDown Browser app should be obtained through Apple School Manager and distributed through your school’s MDM. For non-managed Macs please go to "Download the Lockdown Browser for Unmanaged (Personal) Computers (iPadOS)".
Requirements
- A school-owned, MDM-enrolled iPad
- iPadOS 15.0 or later
- A supervised iPad is recommended for silent installation
- An active Apps and Books connection between Apple School Manager and your MDM
Add LockDown Browser in Apple School Manager
- Sign in to Apple School Manager with an Administrator, Site Manager, or Content Manager account.
- Select Apps and Books.
- Search for LockDown Browser.
- Confirm that the selected app is:
- Developer: Respondus Inc.
- App Store ID: 659101775
- Platform: iPad
- Select the Apple School Manager location connected to your MDM.
- Enter the number of licenses needed. Obtain at least one license for every iPad that will receive the app.
- Select Get or Buy. The app is free, but Apple School Manager still treats each copy as an app license.

Synchronize the App with Your MDM
After obtaining the licenses, synchronize the applicable Apps and Books location with your MDM.
The exact process varies by MDM provider. Confirm that LockDown Browser appears in the MDM’s managed-app inventory before attempting deployment.
Deploy the App
- Locate LockDown Browser in your MDM’s managed-app inventory.
- Configure it as a managed app.
- Use device-based assignmentwhen possible. Device assignment:
- Does not require the student to sign in with an Apple Account
- Allows silent installation on supervised iPads
- Lets the school revoke and reassign licenses
- Assign the app to the appropriate iPads, device group, class, or smart group.
- Set the installation method to automatic or install automatically.
- Enable automatic app updates if your MDM supports that option.
- Confirm that the app installs successfully on a test iPad before deploying it broadly.
Apple School Manager supplies the app licenses, but the connected MDM performs the actual installation.
Using LockDown Browser
Students should normally begin the exam from their school’s learning or assessment system. When the exam requires LockDown Browser, the system will direct the student into the installed app.
The instructor must specifically allow iPads for the exam. Installing the app does not automatically make every LockDown Browser exam available on an iPad.
During an exam, LockDown Browser may prevent students from:
- Opening other applications
- Visiting unauthorized websites
- Taking screenshots
- Copying or printing exam content
- Leaving the exam before it is submitted
Troubleshooting
If the app does not install:
- Confirm that the iPad is enrolled and communicating with the MDM.
- Confirm that an available app license exists in the correct Apple School Manager location.
- Synchronize Apps and Books with the MDM again.
- Confirm that the app is assigned using device-based licensing.
- Confirm that the iPad has internet access and is running iPadOS 15.0 or later.
- Verify that installation restrictions do not block managed applications.
If the app installs but the exam will not open:
- Confirm that the instructor enabled iPad use for that exam.
- Verify that the student is opening the correct course and assessment.
- Update LockDown Browser to the latest available version.
