This process is for school-owned Windows devices managed by your school’s endpoint-management system. For personally owned or unmanaged computers please go to "Download the Lockdown Browser for Unmanaged (Personal) Computers (Windows)".
Requirements
- A school-owned Windows computer
Windows (MSI Installer)
- Download the attached MSI zip file and unzip the installer.
- Every managed solution provider will have a slightly different process so please refer to your managed solution provider's instructions on how best to deploy MSI installers.
- Please refer to the attached document from our vendor on how to deploy the installer.
Using LockDown Browser
Students should normally begin their exam from the school’s learning or assessment system. When LockDown Browser is required, the assessment system will direct the student to the installed application.
During an exam, LockDown Browser may prevent students from:
- Opening other applications
- Visiting unauthorized websites
- Copying or printing exam content
- Taking screenshots
- Switching away from the assessment
- Exiting before submitting the exam
If Respondus Monitor is enabled, the computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone, and Windows privacy settings must permit the application to use them.
Troubleshooting
If LockDown Browser does not install:
- Confirm that the ZIP archive was extracted before deployment.
- Confirm that all supporting files remain with the installer.
- Verify that the installation runs in the system context with administrative privileges.
- Check the endpoint-management system’s installation logs.
- Review the Windows Event Viewer and MSI installation logs.
- Confirm that antivirus or application-control policies are not blocking the installer.
- Restart the device and retry the installation.
To generate a detailed MSI installation log, use:
msiexec.exe /i "LockDownBrowserLab.msi" /qn /norestart /l*v "%WINDIR%\Temp\LockDownBrowser-Install.log"If the application installs but an exam will not open:
- Confirm that the student is opening the correct course and assessment.
- Verify that the exam is configured to use LockDown Browser.
- Update LockDown Browser to the current Ethos-supported version.
- Confirm that the computer meets the current Respondus system requirements.
- Check whether web filtering, firewall rules, or endpoint-security software is blocking the assessment platform.
